Each school year two educational trips are offered for Springman and Attea students. Eighth graders travel to Washington DC on a four-day, three night, tour and seventh graders visit Springfield, Illinois, on a two-day, one night, tour. The trips are organized and chaperoned by Springman and Attea teachers, but are not school sponsored. Arrangements are made through Brightspark Travel, which is located in Northbrook, Illinois and is one of the leading student tour operators in the United States. Brightspark has been affiliated with Glenview middle school student trips for over 40 years.
The Washington DC trip is scheduled for the weekend of January 15-18. Monday is a holiday (Martin Luther King Day), so no school days are missed for the trip. The group departs by scheduled airlines Friday afternoon and returns home Monday evening. This school year, Friday, 1/15, is designated as a weather make-up day. The DC trip transfer buses will depart for the airport from the Attea and Springman parking lots midday whether school is in session or not. Last year there were 277 members in the traveling party from Springman and Attea. Touring is provided in luxury coaches. Students choose their roommates (4 students per room) and can room with friends from either school. All admissions, accommodations (Embassy Suites, Arlington, VA), transportation and food are prepaid. The only additional cost for participants would be incidental purchases and souvenirs. The 2015 cost of the tour is $1,275, which is paid with an initial deposit in the fall and installments leading up to the time of departure. Due to the fact that the school does not sponsor the trip, the coordinating teacher chaperones reserve the right to deny participation to students whose behavior at school indicates that they could be detrimental to the group’s experience in Washington.
Since the tour is not sponsored by the school, registration takes place through the mail and on line. Materials for the DC trip arrive by mail in a “Brightspark” envelope in September with a deposit due by early October. If you have any questions at this time, feel free to contact Mr. Scott Buzard, retired Springman teacher, at email@example.com, Mr. Dave Tosh, Springman, at firstname.lastname@example.org, or Ms. Theresa Jasonowicz, Attea, at email@example.com
The Springfield trip is scheduled for Friday, April 8, and Saturday, April 9. The group travels by luxury coach to Springfield, departing at the end of the school day Friday and spends the night at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. All of Saturday is spent visiting the Lincoln and government sites in the state capital. The buses return home by 10:00 PM Saturday night. Springman and Attea students may room and travel together, as is the case on the DC trip. This year the cost of the tour is $289 and last year there were 348 participants.
Materials for the Springfield trip are sent out in January.
