Is there a calendar of ALL events? We do post a calendar of P.T.A. events here, but for school events, please check the district calendar. (Be aware that the district is moving to a new calendar and that information on where to find school based events may change over the summer)

I’m new to the district. Where can I find answers to my questions, especially over the summer?  Some of your questions might be answered in this FAQ, or on the PTA’s Links page. More great resources are your school office personnel, your principals, and our PTA President, who can help you find all the answers you need. Please be sure you are subscribed to updates from the District.

Middle School is new for us. How do I find out everything I need to know? First, you’ll receive information over the summer with upcoming dates, supply lists, and more. In early August, you’ll have the opportunity to find out your child’s team and attend an open house. Most importantly, be sure to attend Curriculum night in the Fall– check the district calendar for that date. Finally, don’t forget to read the notes in your child’s Assignment Notebook, plus the Focus Newsletter and your child’s Team Newsletter.

What is Curriculum Night? At Curriculum night you will learn about the school expectations and routines, meet your child’s teachers, have a chance to join the PTA and buy Spirit Wear, and much more. Parents should definitely try to attend this informative event!

Will I get newsletters from the Middle Schools? Our PTA creates the Focus Newsletter, based on information provided by the school. Please contact the PTA if you aren’t on the list to receive this. In addition, each school Team puts out a separate newsletter, which is either delivered by e-mail or in backpacks. Please contact someone from the team if you are not receiving this informative newsletter.

Which member of the “team” should I contact if I have questions about my child?  Most teams create small groups within the team that remain the same for the entire year. Each team has different names for these groups (base camp, advisory, village, etc.). Find out about the groups on your child’s team. The teacher for your child’s group is often a good “one stop” place to start.  Also, each team has a “Team Leader,” one teacher designated to be the point person on the team. This teacher is also a great resource for you.  Of course, you can contact any of your child’s teachers for assistance at any time!  Their contact information is in the Directory, as well as on each school’s website under “Teams.”

How do I find out about school clubs, sports and activities?   The September and October editions of our Focus Newsletter will list the activities, and students will receive this information during morning announcements at school. Please also check the Team Newsletters, the PTA’s Links page, or the school office if necessary. The schools also post a comprehensive list of activities on their websites.  This information includes the name of the club sponsor and their meeting dates/times.

What is the Activity Bus? You will receive information about this when you sign up for the bus. There is an early bus for early arrivals (like Band, Choir, and Orchestra), and a late bus for after-school activities (like sports and clubs).  The early bus ensures that students arrive at school by 7:25am for the Overture period. The regular morning run ensures that ALL students are at school by 8:20am.  When the school day ends at 3:00pm, the first after school bus run leaves by 3:05pm. If students choose to stay after school for an authorized activity, they can take the 4:05pm bus run home (this is the last bus run of the day). All bus runs are available to students who receive bus services.

Do I have to call if my child won’t be on the bus? No.

Who do I call if the bus doesn’t come? The bus company can be reached at:  847/324-4129. Our district transportation office is: 998-5064.

Late Arrival/ Early Dismissal: Please contact the school Health Coordinator to give advance notice.

Forgot something important? If your child calls and asks for you to bring something, please let them know that the item will have to wait in the office for them. Delivering items to the classrooms is rare, as it disrupts classroom time.

How do I get homework if my child misses school? First, please check your child’s team page for homework updates, or check the Homework Hotline listed on the team page. A student must be absent for at least 2 days before requesting that homework be assembled by the Main Office.  A “homework

buddy” should be contacted to find out about missed assignments for an absence of only 1 day. Upon returning to school, the student should check in with his/her teachers. Homework requests for 2 day absences should be submitted to the Main Office by 10:00 a.m. on the day it will be picked up.  Teachers will determine appropriate due dates for these assignments, and will offer students an opportunity to seek extra help before and after school when they return.  The homework may be picked up from the Main Office between 3:15 and 4:30 p.m. For a week or more absence: a request must be submitted at least a week before the homework is needed.  Parents should be aware that not all schoolwork may be made up independently; students may need to meet with teachers before or after school for additional “catch-up,” to take missed tests/quizzes, or to do project work. For any long-term absence due to illness, homebound instruction may be arranged through the Student Services Administrator.

Homework Hotline:  Each team supports a “homework hotline” through which the day’s homework can be accessed.  The phone numbers for the “Homework Hotlines” are listed on the team websites, and at the front of your child’s Assignment Notebook.

Team Newsletters:  Each team publishes a newsletter that provides students and parents with information regarding upcoming team events, teacher availability for extra help, due dates for projects and tests, and an overview of the material covered in each class for the week ahead.  These newsletters are provided to students with instructions to bring them home and share them with their parents. Team newsletters are also posted on our website each week.

ID Card:  Students must have their ID cards at all times, especially in the lunchroom and on the bus. If lost, cards can be replaced for $5 in the office.

Cafeteria Information: Importantly, students MUST have their ID card to enter the lunchroom. Also, they can choose extra items “a la carte” to eat or drink, which will add to their bill. You should discuss your expectations about extra food and drinks with your child. If your child does not have their ID with them, they should not ask others to purchase lunch for them.  They will receive a bag lunch offering instead of the regular menu. Your child should not purchase food for other students, either. You can access your child's lunch account balance on line through Powerschool.

Cellphones: Must be registered with the school, and must remain OFF, and in their locker, during the day.

Cameras: Are not permitted at school for privacy and safety reasons, this includes the use of camera features on cell phones.

How do I join the P.T.A.? You can join anytime. There will be membership volunteers at open houses and curriculum night, or please click here to join.

Where do the PTA dues go?  Our PTA is part of the Illinois and National PTA chapters.  So, in part, our dues support the creation of resources and advocacy efforts at the state and national levels.  Locally, they go towards the directory as well as projects that our membership decides to do.

Do P.T.A. meetings apply to me? Whether you’re a member or not, every parent will learn something new about the schools at our meetings. Each school’s principal tells what’s going on that month at the schools, guest speakers enlighten us on a variety of subjects, and committees give updates on P.T.A. interests and activities. Meetings are open to everyone!

Why does the P.T.A. need to raise money? While state funds and the Glenview Education Foundation (GEF) do cover most of our schools’ needs, P.T.A. fills in many gaps and adds valuable programs. P.T.A. helps fund grants for teacher Wish List items, Educational Exploration programs like Guest Speakers and Artists in Residence, and so much more.

How are the majority of the PTA funds generated?  Historically, our wrapping paper sale is our biggest fundraiser of the year, but there are other fundraising opportunities throughout the year. A couple of easy ventures are eScrip shopping and using Target’s credit card supporting our schools.

Why are most meetings held during the day?  PTA meetings include both teacher and principal reports, and so we try to have the meetings at times when the teachers and principals are available.  Our teachers and principals have a specific contractual day that they work, and most PTA meetings are within those hours to include their participation. The highly popular “Turning Points” presentation is offered both day and night, to be sure everyone has the chance to attend this insightful and relevant event.

I’m a working parent and can’t often volunteer. Should I still join the P.T.A.? While volunteers are essential to everything we do, we certainly understand time limitations. Please join us for meetings when you can, as you’ll learn so much about your child’s educational environment. Another way to stay connected is to e-mail us to get on the mailing list for updates. Perhaps you’ll discover an opportunity that’s manageable with your schedule.
